Yesterday, while working in Internet Explorer, I got a really scary Critical Alert message that my computer had been infected and I should call a phone number immediately to get it fixed. I did not call but now every time I open my browser, I see the same message. How can I fix this?

Sorry that you are facing this problem. This is a very common “Critical Alert” scam. Follow the steps below to fix this problem:

  1. Disconnect your computer from the internet (Wifi or wired)
  2. Close the web browser.
  3. Clean out the cache. You can do so by selecting Tools (via the Gear Icon) > Safety > Delete browsing history
  4. The scam may have changed your homepage options. Go to preferences and change the homepage that is loaded whenever you open your browser (Like http://www.google.com).

Please let me know if that solves your issue. Always remember do not click any messages that appear in the pop up message as they are scams designed to steal your information.
